FAQ #25: Which Pool Type Offers the Most Design Flexibility?
Fiberglass pools are pre-manufactured shells installed in one piece — fast, low maintenance, limited in shape. Vinyl liner pools use a flexible liner over a steel or polymer frame — more shape flexibility, lower upfront cost, but liners need replacing every 8–15 years. Concrete (gunite) pools are built on-site — fully custom in shape and size, highest upfront and maintenance cost, longest lifespan.
Fiberglass pools are consistently the lowest maintenance option. The smooth gel coat surface resists algae and requires fewer chemicals than concrete. There's no liner to replace and the surface doesn't need resurfacing for 20–30 years under normal conditions.
Fiberglass pools are limited by the shapes and sizes available from manufacturers — you can't get a truly custom shape. Most fiberglass pools max out around 16 feet wide (limited by transportation). They also can't be built on certain slopes or in areas with difficult access.
Vinyl liners typically last 8–15 years depending on chemical balance, UV exposure, and usage. Replacement costs $3,500–$8,000+ depending on pool size and liner pattern. This is the primary ongoing cost of owning a vinyl liner pool.
A saltwater pool uses a salt chlorine generator to produce chlorine from dissolved salt — it's not chlorine-free, it just makes its own. The water feels softer and is gentler on eyes and skin. The generator costs $800–$2,500 upfront and needs replacing every 3–7 years. For most homeowners who swim regularly, the comfort improvement is worth the cost.
No pressure, no gimmicks. Scott will walk you through which pool type makes the most sense for your property, your budget, and your lifestyle.
